How to light a living room like a luxury hotel

The secret isn't a brighter ceiling. It's three quiet layers of warm light, at three heights.

A living room at dusk, lit by a single warm lamp

Walk into a great hotel lobby at night and you'll notice something: you can't see where the light comes from. There's no glare, no single hard source, just pools of warmth that make faces, fabrics and wood look their best.

1. Ambient: the soft wash

Dim or switch off the overhead light. Let a floor or wall light bounce off the ceiling instead, so the room glows rather than shines.

2. Task: light where you live

A reading lamp beside the sofa, a lamp on the desk. Keep them low and warm (2700K), so they feel like an invitation, not an office.

3. Accent: the jewellery

This is where a sculptural lamp belongs: on a console, a sideboard or a shelf, lit for its own sake. By day it's an object; at night it's the warmest point in the room, and the one your guests remember.

The hotel rule

Aim for at least three light sources in a room, at three different heights, and never rely on the ceiling alone.
